![]() This website is part of a project that was recently
completed by the Redwood City Public Library in an effort to preserve
the history of the Japanese-American community. The goal of the project
was to gather information, for inclusion in the Library's Local History
Collection, about Japanese-Americans interned during World War II.
The project centered around a collection of letters between a local banker, J. Elmer Morrish, and many of the interned Japanese-Americans who lived in Redwood City. Morrish corresponded faithfully with the internees, overseeing their affairs while they were interned and insuring that their homes and businesses were intact upon their return. The Morrish Collection correspondence, as well as interviews with internees, capture the legacy of a large part of California's population during the 20th century. It is the purpose ot the Redwood City Public Library to preserve this legacy on a local scale for the education and knowledge of future generations. This website is funded in part by the Library Services and Technology Act. LSTA is a federal grant program administered in California by the State Librarian. |
